- Osman Tambunan was 70 years old in April. His health has been failing for the
past few years, and it has been months since he could attend the assembly of
the saints. It's all he can do to walk a few steps down the lane and back to
the house. His physical world is circumscribed by physical weakness, but his
spiritual vision is 20/20, his faith unabated.
I went to see him today. I knew he was a World Bible School student years ago,
so I asked if he remembered his teacher's name. He went to the back of the
house and returned with a yellowing sheaf of papers, an 11-page, handwritten
letter from Perry and Katheryn Price of England, Arkansas. It was dated July
1978. Tambunan would have been 46 when he received it. He worked at the
Japanese Embassy then. He was a Muslim, but he was searching. He also showed me
his WBS certificate, signed by Jimmie Lovell.
"We received the answers to your introductory lesson in April," the Prices
wrote, "and you got them 100% correct. We kept it to have something to remember
you by."
(Is there a sheaf of yellowing papers somewhere in Arkansas from Indonesia?)
It was a month or so later the Prices received Tambunan's answers to the
six-lesson course, along with questions ranging from baptism to the deity of
Jesus. Their reply contained 35 Scriptures and many words of personal
encouragement. Tambunan read it carefully, and the old letter has his own study
notes written in the margins.
The last lines of the Prices' letter said, "Please be baptized as soon as
possible according to Romans 6." They told him who to contact.
Tambunan went to Jalan Sumatra and was baptized into Christ after a couple of
weeks of study. For almost 24 years since, he has been a bulwark in the church.
God bless World Bible School teachers like Perry and Katheryn Price. May their
descendants be like the sands on the seashore, as our Lord has always intended
