This Week - 1635

Paul Le Jeune

In February 1635, Paul Le Jeune (1591-1664), the recently arrived Jesuit missionary to New France (Quebec, Canada) achieved a breakthrough with the local native American tribe. Facing the barrier of his ignorance of the language, manners, and customs of the tribal people in Quebec, he decided to accompany the Indians on their winter hunt. This experience led him to a mastery of the language and earned the goodwill of the tribe. He then led many to Jesus by helping them to become more sedentary in lifestyle, establishing hospitals for the aged and sick, establishing schools for educating the young, and multiplying other missionaries to continue sharing the good news of Jesus to them. He is regarded as the founder of the missionary movement to Canada. His influence was felt as far as French Louisiana, where fellow missionaries used his example and materials to educate and evangelize slaves leading to Catholic support of abolitionism.

Prayer points:

1.     Pray for Native American tribes to embrace Christ. Many still live attached to their power/fear cultural religion of spirits. Because of their loss of land and society, many have turned to drugs and alcohol. Pray that the peace of Jesus reaches all native Americans.

2.     Pray for pioneer missionaries to go to places where no one has gone before, like Paul LeJeune did 400 years ago. There are still many unreached people groups throughout the world.
