Day 19

Back on Sunday, we talked about how Jesus was a refugee. Know what else He was?

I mean besides Son of God, Son of Man, Lord, Savior, Messiah, etc.?

He was a third culture kid.

Third Culture Kids (TCKs) are children who spend a portion of their lives growing up in a country or culture different from that of a parent’s passport country. Were Mary and Joseph to have had papyrus passports, they would not have matched the portion of Jesus’ childhood that he lived in Egypt.

It makes me wonder all kind of things. How did Egyptians view Jewish refugees? Did Joseph work as a carpenter there? What language did Jesus learn to speak with his first friends? Once they got back to Nazareth, what Egyptian dishes did Mary cook from time to time to remember? Was there a special memento they kept from Egypt on their long journey back, or did they leave everything?

We used to call TCKs ‘missionary kids’, but the term TCK makes a lot more sense. Here’s a link to an article about TCKs that might help you understand a bit more about them. The MRI community has a bunch of them – 14 at last count, with a couple on the way.

Pray for TCKs today. Pray that Jesus, himself a TCK, would be good to them. Pray that as they move between worlds, they would be world Christians who love people well. Pray that Jesus would guard their hearts, and that the children within the MedRim community would grow in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and people – just like another TCK did a couple thousand years ago.
