Praying during Ramadan

by Andy Johnson

Prayer Coordinator and Worker Care Director

Today, March 22, is the first day of the month of Ramadan in 2023. This is an extremely important month to Muslims, as they are called to fast, pray, and give with special devotion throughout the month.

It is also an important time for those making disciples among Muslims. Year after year, we hear of encounters with Jesus as followers of Islam become more spiritually attuned this month. As is so often the case, they set out looking for one thing and find another.

To that end, I’d like to do two things with this email.

First, if you haven’t already done so, I’m inviting you to sign up for our Ramadan PrayerChallenge. You will receive daily emails with requests shaped by MedRim workers for the next month. I hope you’ll consider answering this challenge to daily prayer.

Second, I’m calling on you to pray into some of the misunderstandings Muslims have about Jesus and His people. Please join me in praying:

  • That Muslims in the MedRim would be able to differentiate between Jesus and western politics;

  • That they would know that, while we are not perfect, the people of Jesus are not the same as what they see in movies;

  • That Muslims would be given access to the injil (the Arabic name for the Gospel of Jesus) and that they would find it to be a true revelation of Jesus;

  • That Muslims around the MedRim would somehow discover that their ancestors were following Jesus in authentically African and Middle-Eastern ways centuries before Mohammed; and

  • That they would encounter believers whose lives are defined not by hate or fear or division, but rather by love and grace.

Thank you for praying.

Peace.

Andy
